Electrical safety at work

Everyday checks that prevent shocks and electrical fires — and what to do if someone is electrocuted.

Everyday checks

  • Look at plugs, cables and extension leads before use. Do not use anything with damaged insulation, scorch marks or loose wires — label it and report it.
  • Do not overload sockets or "daisy-chain" extension leads.
  • Keep liquids away from electrical equipment and never handle switches with wet hands.
  • Use circuit protection (RCD / ELCB) on portable equipment, especially outdoors and in wet areas.
  • Keep electrical panels closed, labelled and clear of storage.

Work on electrical systems

  • Only competent, authorised electricians should repair or alter wiring.
  • Isolate the supply and use lockout/tagout before any maintenance, and test that it is dead before touching.
  • Keep ladders, scaffolds and cranes well away from overhead power lines.

If someone is electrocuted

  1. Do not touch them while they may still be in contact with the supply.
  2. Switch off the power at the switch, plug or main isolator. If you cannot, move the source away with a dry non-conducting object.
  3. Call 1122 and start first aid / CPR if needed.

General guidance for awareness only. It does not replace hands-on training, your organisation's procedures or advice from emergency services. In an emergency in Pakistan call 1122 (Rescue), 16 (Fire brigade) or 115 (Edhi ambulance).
